What is Ayurveda? March 8, 2009

In yesterdays review of Emerson Resort and Spa, I mentioned that the treatment menu was heavy on Ayurvedic rituals. 

From the ancient Indian language, Ayurveda means “Science of Life”.

Ayurvedic spa treatments are based upon centuries-old Ayurvedic therapies that support balance and bliss in life.  Treatments contain oils, herbs and aromas chosen by the therapist to promote balance between mind and body.

A good example of an Ayurvedic treatment is  Shirodhara.  My friend Gina had this treatment when we went on a girls spa weekend at the Emerson Resort and Spa.  Shirodhara involves gently pouring liquids, usually oils, over the “third eye” (forehead).

    Here is my view, Ayurvedahas been practiced safely and effectively in India for the past 4,000 years. It must work otherwise Ayurveda would not have survived this long. It is holistic science that emphasizes prevention. It is also a lifestyle science as it incorporates in a daily lifestyle plan herbs, diet, exercise, and more.

    Here is a website I have found information that is easy to understand.


    Take their Dosha test, it is fun. Then once you know your Dosha you design a plan that includes herbs, diet, etc. It has helped me.


    One product I take everyday is Nature’s Formulary Chyawanprash. It is tasty and really helps my energy level and immune system
