Review of the Fitness Spa at Eastside Racquet Club (Manlius, NY) May 14, 2009

What do you get when you combine the area’s premier tennis club, an upscale adults only fitness center and a spa?  The newly opened Fitness Spa at Eastside Racquet Club.

While tennis remains the main focus at Eastside, the club has been branching out into other offerings to become a more well-rounded facility that appeals to the entire family.  Mom can take a fitness class while the kids take a tennis lesson.  Dad can get a deep tissue massage to get some relief from that power tennis game he recently played.  There is even a nursery for small children.  The emphasis here is on family and wellness.

The Fitness Spa is 2,500 square feet of cardio equipment, strength training equipment and free weights.   Each cardio machine features an attached LCD television screen and Ipod connectivity.  The atrium is a newly  renovated 600 square foot multi-use fitness room for Spinning, Yoga, Pilates, and dance.  Surrounded by glass on two sides, natural light spills in and there is a beautiful view of the outdoor tennis courts in a park-like setting.

A newly constructed massage area has been added with two fully outfitted spa rooms that pamper guests and members with a variety of body wraps, scrubs, and relaxing massages.  There is a small waiting area devoted just to those guests waiting for spa services.   The treatment menu offers a variety of massages – Swedish, Deep tissue, Thai, Sports, Couples, Hot Stone and tandem.  A 60 minute Swedish massage is $70.

I visited Eastside Racquet Club and the Fitness Spa at Eastside Racquet Club on a recent quiet Wednesday for a tour and an action packed adventure that gave me a glimpse into what a member (or guest) might experience.  Patty, the Tennis & Events Coordinator, was responsible for putting together my fun-filled visit.

My tour of the Club revealed 6 indoor courts, 8 outdoor Har-Tru clay courts, large locker rooms with showers and a sauna, a child care room and plenty of comfortable leather couches with perfect views of the indoor courts throughout.  Of course, there is also the new fitness spa.

The first stop on my journey was a private introductory tennis lesson with Thinus.  When I say introductory, I mean introductory.  I’ve never played tennis before…never even held a racquet.  Thinus was patient, supportive and very encouraging.  I had been anxious about the lesson but ended up enjoying it more than I expected.  Tennis offerings at The Club include an outstanding tennis academy for children of all ages, children’s summer camps, clinics for adults, tournaments and children’s birthday parties.

Although Eastside doesn’t serve food, they do work with local restaurants to provide food for parties and special events.  A perfect example of this is the healthy and delicious lunch that the staff treated me to from Cafe 119 in Manlius.  I had the most amazing salad, the Crimson Salad with romaine lettuce, strawberries, cantaloupe, raisins, apples, grilled chicken and pistachios.  It came with homemade creamy poppy seed dressing and sweet bread sticks dusted with confectioners sugar.  It was heavenly and I’ve been thinking about recreating it at home ever since.  Patty can coordinate just about any type of event for you – weddings, corporate events, private parties, bridal showers just to name a few.

Next up was a session with Christine, Eastside’s personal trainer and one of the massage therapists.  Like Thinus, Christine was patient and encouraging and a lot of fun to work out with.  I could get used to this!

Christine gave me a sample of what a typical personal training session would be like – an intake questionnaire where I was asked questions about my health and fitness goals, an orientation to the strength training equipment, and some work using an exercise ball, bands, medicine balls and other equipment.  Christine taught me proper form when executing basic exercises like lunges and crunches.  It wasn’t my first visit with a personal trainer, but it had been a long time and the it was great to learn some new exercises and get some reminders on proper execution of some old ones.

The last stop on my tour of Eastside was a relaxing massage with Pat in the newly opened massage rooms.  Pat combined hot stones (my favorite) with Swedish massage techniqes.  My massage was customized to address some sore spots on my upper back and shoulders – the result of too much time spent at the computer.    Christine and Pat, the two massage therapists at Eastside each have massages types that they specialize in.  When you call for an appointment, you’ll be directed to the therapist that specializes in your massage preference.

I enjoyed my day at Eastside tremendously.  The combination of tennis, lunch, fitness and massage was so much fun.  I suggested to Patty that the club should offer a package similar to the day she constructed for me.  What a great way for friends to spend time together to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion!  I was thrilled to hear that plans are already in the works for this.

I’d like to thank Patty, Pat, Thinus, Christine and all the staff at Eastside Racquet Club for their hospitality during my visit.  I really had a great time!

Review of Wet, The Spa at Treasure Island (Las Vegas, NV) May 11, 2009

Over the years, Treasure Island Hotel in Las Vegas has had a bit of an identity crisis.  First, they were a pirate themed resort with a big appeal to families and children.  That was back in the days when Vegas was trying to promote itself as a family friendly destination.  Those days are no longer. You’ve probably seen the slogan “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” or “Your Vegas is showing.”

Now, Treasure Islands “theme” is more sensual and seductive….a playground for adults.  Gone is the pirate show which has been replaced by the Sirens of T.I. (That’s what they sometimes refer to themselves as…..T.I.) This theme seems seems to carry over to the spa’s name (Wet) and the spas website, which takes a minimalistic approach to providing information.

But the funny thing is, the theme doesn’t carry over to the spa itself.  In fact, the spa is a classy mix of earth tone colors and earth-like materials.

One of the things I love most about the spa at T.I. is the full service juice bar with smoothies.  While relaxing in the whirlpool, a spa attendant brought me a cool smoothie to enjoy. It was the first time I’d been offered a beverage while using a spa whirlpool, other than water, and I thought it was unique. But I was a little worried what the impact of a spilled smoothie would be on the swirling waters.

Bottom Line – the spa at T.I. is convenientif you are staying at Treasure Island.  But it isn’t the biggest or the best that Las Vegas has to offer.  If you aren’t a hotel guest or are looking to branch out a little, there are many other more luxurious and interesting choices on The Strip.

The Watermark Hotel & Spa is just one of three Four-Star spas in Texas to earn 4 stars in Mobil Travel Guide’s 2008 America’s Best Hotels and Resort Spas.

The 17,000 square foot spa features 20 treatment rooms, separate mens and womens sanctuary lounges, a hydrotherapy tub, separate men’s and women’s whirlpool, steam and sauna.  But the best part is the spa’s outdoor  poolside café with rooftop views of the city.

When I visited on a Friday afternoon in late January of 2006, I had the place all to myself.  My Watermark Spa refresher package included 3 treatments from a list of 6 choices and a delicious and healthy lunch at the outdoor rooftop cafe.

What I really enjoyed was my soak in the women’s whirlpool with both natural light streaming in and candlelight surrounding the whirpool.

The Watermark is a beautiful hotel and the spa is a delight whether you are a hotel guest or not.   This is a must see in San Antonio.

Review of The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn (San Diego, CA) May 8, 2009

I stayed at the Rancho Bernardo Inn (RBI) in January of 2007 while attending a conference at the resort. Our conferences are usually at high-rise hotels in busy cities, so I was thrilled for the change of pace.  RBI’s mailing address is in San Diego, but the resort was about a 45 minute drive from the city.  I was blown away by the resort’s beauty are serenity.

During my visit, the new luxury spa was under construction. During the construction, the spa was set up in a few of the guest rooms. They did a great job making it feel calm and serene and I had an excellent massage.

I haven’t been back since the new spa opened, but I’m impressed reading about some of the new features, like the Spa Garden. “Unique among San Diego Resort Spas, the Spa Garden features: Five temperature controlled treatment casitas, relaxing water features, hydro spa, relaxation area.”  It sounds heavenly.

I also love that they make their green tea and rose body treatment fresh each day, there is a saline spa pool and that they have temperature-controlled outdoor treatment Cabanas with relaxing water features and sunning lounges.

Spa Vacation

Three college friends visit a spa in Mexico for two weeks to reconnect, get healthy and maybe get into some mischief.  It’s cute and fun – a great vacation read and an even better spa read.  I’ve never been to Rancho La Puerta (Mexico’s famed spa and the original destination spa), but I can only guess that the fabled resort in the novel is modeled after “The Ranch”.

Waterfalls Spa – Hope Lake Lodge (Cortland, New York) May 2, 2009

Waterfalls International Spa

Hope Lake Lodge & Indoor Waterpark
2000 NYS Route 392
Cortland, NY  13045

607-835-6300

When it opens in the late fall of 2009, Waterfalls Spa at Hope Lake Lodge will be a luxurious resort spa designed with the principles of Feng Shui in mind and an emphasis on wellness.

One thing that will be unique  (and cool!) about this spa is that the treatment spaces will have the ability to change color to allow for “customization of services and harmonization with each individual.”

Spalovers can look forward to a 5,500 square foot spa in addition to a four star condominium hotel, indoor water park, fitness center and a host of other amenities.

The spa will feature two waterfalls spa suites that are designed to accommodate just about any treatment on the menu.  The suites are complete with two multipurpose tables, a two person vibration therapy tub, an infrared sauna, a shower and lounging area with flat screen television.  In total, 14 treatment areas will be available.

A planned service treatment menu is available at the web site.  Spa services will include massages, affusions, balneotherapy, facials, manicures, pedicures, specialty treatments, make-up application, and complete salon services.

The spa will be managed by Aspen Spa Management.
